Our ascent up the Tree of Life begins with the lowest sefirah, Malkhut. The name of God associated with Malkhut is Adonai. Adonai is the plural form of Adon (“Lord”), which was used in ordinary speech as a title of respect when addressing a superior. When applied to God, Adonai is a title of honor that denotes God’s absolute lordship. Al though Adonai literally means “my Lords,” it is translated as “Lord.” Gikatilla says that Adonai is the name of God that is “closest to all created things.”[374] Adonai is “the great provider of Creation” who “governs all creatures, gives life and death, bequeaths and enriches, brings low and exalts, makes sick and heals.”[375] He also says that the wise draw their wisdom from Adonai.”

Prayer to Adonai

(Malkhut/Kingdom, Shekhinah/Divine Presence)

“I will praise thee, O Adonai, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.” “I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.... For the kingdom [Malkhut] is Adonai’s, and he is the governor among the nations.”[424] Adonai, great provider and governor of all creatures, you who are closest to all created things, fill me with vigor and strength. Heal me of the maladies of body, mind and soul. Heal those less fortunate than I, especially those who suffer from life-threatening diseases that would cut short their lives.”

“O Adonai, bring me closer to God every day. Bestow your wisdom upon me, that I may act wisely in all matters you have placed under my care. Adonai, well of living waters, eclipse the enemy of pride. I affirm, O God, that you are the source of my talents. In gratitude and love, I offer these to the benefit of God and man. May I serve thee all the days of my life. Ein Sof, direct your light through Malkhut that the kingdom of God—the consciousness of God—may be made manifest in me, in all your children and in the world. I offer all my devotions and my good deeds to unite the Blessed Holy One and his Shekhinah.”

“Shekhinah, Feminine Presence of God, take up thy abode within me! [Here offer personal prayers to Adonai.]”
