“Cordovero says that in order to acquire power, which is the attribute of Gevurah, we must be careful not to excite the evil urge—the dark side of human nature that tempts us to sin. “The evil inclination [evil urge] should be bound and tied down,” he says, so that we don’t become angry or desire money or honor. Walking the spiritual path requires constant vigilance, for any one of us can be tempted by the evil urge until we are perfected in God. Don’t seek to derive pleasure from the evil urge, says Cordovero. “However, for his wife’s sake [a man] should gently bestir his evil inclination in the direction of the sweet Powers, to provide her with clothes and with a house, for example.” For by adorning his wife, a man is really adorning Shekhinah, the feminine aspect of God. But if we seek power for our own sake, we awaken strong and destructive powers in the world of the sefirot. And power without the necessary balance of love can destroy the world. Therefore, says Cordovero, “one can observe how ugly is anger and suchlike, for it causes the strong Powers to prevail.” If we allow sudden anger to overtake us, our spiritual progress will be compromised. God wants to entrust us with his light, but he will withhold it from us as long as we allow anger to occupy our mind and spirit; for anger funnels God’s light to the Other Side and ignites the forces of evil.”
