The names of God that Kabbalists associate with Yesod are El Hai (“Living God”) and Shaddai (“Almighty”). The patriarchs knew God by the name El Shaddai, meaning “God Almighty.”[376] When God appeared to Abraham to announce that he would make his covenant with him, he said, “I am El Shaddai; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”[377] Scholars say the literal meaning of Shaddai is uncertain. It may be derived from the word for “mountain,” “deal violently with” or “to be strong and powerful.” Thus, El Shaddai may mean the God of the Mountain or it may be a title suggesting power, strength and stability. Gikatilla says that El Shaddai is known as “the Fount of living waters” because it sustains all creatures. El Shaddai is also “responsible for the prevention of tribulation.”

“Gikatilla relates the name El Hai to eternal life and repentance.   The person who wants to reach eternal life should cleave to El Hai.... ... [El Hai] stands ready to be merciful and do the bidding of all who ask when the person intends to mend and improve his ways.... [The] Shrine which is called El Hai has a place which is called the Gates of Tears, and God Himself opens these gates three times a day. For the penitent, these are the gates where they take consolation and repent their evil deeds. For when the penitent prays, cries and lets tears fall in his prayers, his prayer and his cries enter the Gates of Tears.[379]”

Prayer to El Hai and Shaddai

(Yesod/Foundation)

“My soul thirsteth for God, El Hai.” “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of Shaddai hath given me life.” “Yea, Shaddai shall be my defense ... For then shalt I have my delight in Shaddai and shalt lift up my face unto God. I shall make my prayer unto him, and he shall hear me.... I shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto me: and the light shall shine upon my ways.” “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.... As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation [Yesod].”[425] El Shaddai, God Almighty, fount of living waters who sustains all creatures, release abundance to all your children—especially those who hunger and thirst for thee. El Hai, the Living God, I ask you to forgive me for all misdeeds I have ever committed in this life and past lives. Each time that I fall, comfort me that I might have the courage to rise again and the strength to face and conquer the evil urge. Shaddai, give me the willpower and fortitude to right every wrong”

“El Hai and Shaddai, help me to overcome all lusts of the flesh and turn my thoughts to thee. Let no harsh or discordant words issue from me. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength and my redeemer.”[426] Ein Sof, direct your light through Yesod to transform tribulation into joy, poverty into the abundant life, and barrenness into fruitfulness. [Here offer personal prayers to El Hai and Shaddai.]”
